There are many macro-level issues impacting the nonprofit sector—systemic racism, climate change, COVID, and more—and raising timely questions about nonprofit governance models. With the need for systemic change comes the related need for exploration of structural changes to the hierarchical governance models that have been used in the sector for so long.

There are several models for innovative board governance, leadership and leadership transition being implemented in the goal to advance social justice/social change that are important to explore and consider as land trusts embed diversity, equity and inclusion values, principles and practices into their work.
