Process and timeline

You are the foundation of this work.

The individuals within the organization must be committed to taking on this work at each level. Each individual needs to do their own work to better understand their role and how they can be most effective. Since individuals (staff, board members and key volunteers) are in varying stages of acknowledging, understanding and embracing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, this Journey is focused on self-awareness, personal growth, and enhancing interpersonal skills, at a pace that is determined by the individual.

How to conduct the Individual Journey

The journey should begin with the Individual. Ideally, everyone in the organization (staff, board, key volunteers) would start their individual journeys at the same time. This allows each person to have some personal time for introspection and reflection on their own before starting the next Journey as an organization. However, if the entire organization is not ready to take on this work at the same time, that should not deter any staff, volunteer or board member from embarking on the Individual journey, either alone or in groups. For example, the staff could all start together and the board could start together but separately, at a different time. Do what works best for you and your organization.

The resources provided here, including a check-in (self-evaluation) include questions for further reflection and actions you could take. Many people find it helpful to keep a journal or notes with their thoughts and answers. Whether or not you choose to document your responses, it is important to note that you will never be asked to share this information with others. While group discussions are required in the Internal and External Journeys, they are not and should not be required in the Individual Journey.

Some individuals may want to discuss the questions and/or their reactions to a story and others may not. Both reactions are equally valid. Be mindful of and respect these differences. If you are interested in having discussions, ask the group if anyone else would like to join you. Perhaps there are colleagues outside of your organization that you could connect with. Be especially mindful of power dynamics here. For example, if you are the supervisor and ask to have a discussion, others may feel compelled to participate even if it makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, the purpose of the Individual Journey is to provide a safe space for introspection.
