Step 6

Re-evaluate and choose more topics

Re-evaluate the organization

You should invite the same individuals that you did the first time. Also, consider adding other new partners, especially any community groups that you may have started working with during this journey.

Do not be alarmed if the rankings go down. Progress on a diversity, equity and inclusion journey includes becoming aware that you didn’t know what you didn’t know. Increased awareness may cause individuals to rate themselves lower.

Again, using the results of the evaluation as a guide, as a group — staff, board members, key volunteers and external participants — choose the next set of topics. Add these topics to your Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan and schedule at least one group discussion for each topic.

Value your community's input

In order to send a clear message that your land trust values the skills, experience, wisdom, perspectives, time and energy of community members, consider:

  • Offering compensation for community members’ time spent in preparation and participation in the process;

  • Schedule meetings at times that are respectful of community members’ schedules, jobs, work requirements, family care requirements and other responsibilities;

  • Provide food, child care or senior care, and other support that may be needed to enable community members to participate; and

  • Communicate openly and honestly and, at the same time, respect confidentiality.
