Ways to Ask for Money

There are a hundred things an organization can do to raise money, but considerably fewer that make sense for a given land trust at any given time. This document presents a menu of strategies with an exercise designed to help you choose what is right for your land trust.

The Land Trust Alliance is excited to provide a new short-course for Connecticut land trusts to learn how to build a strategic fundraising program.

Land Trust Standards and Practices, Practice 6A. Fiscal Health, includes five elements. This module addresses Practice 6A3: Assess the nature and variability of revenue and seek to diversify funding sources.

To further understand how fundraising works, it is worthwhile to explore what motivates people to

give. Charitable actions reveal important core values that people bring to the community. These

values are reflected in an individual’s philanthropic “face.”

The western program of the Land Trust Alliance often discusses with member land trusts how best to attract and retain employees who are engaged, productive and excited about their jobs. This white paper shows findings from a study done in summer and fall of 2017.
