About This Report / White Paper

The western program of the Land Trust Alliance often discusses with member land trusts how best to attract and retain employees who are engaged, productive and excited about their jobs. These various conversations led to a small set of focused research questions: What techniques and approaches can land trusts use to retain excellent staff members? What are the incentives outside salary and benefits that help land trust leaders retain staff? Our hypothesis going into the
research was that staff retention is not merely a matter of salary level, health insurance programs
or other benefits.

This white paper shows findings from a study done in summer and fall of 2017.
