About This Guidance

Potential board members are often concerned about their personal liability for the actions of the board and land trust. In order to recruit and retain board members, land trusts need to protect board volunteers against the risks inherent in the work of conservation, including litigation. This document provides a quick overview of liability protections as well as a set of guidelines that will help board members fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities while minimizing risk.
