About This Webinar

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, sea level rise, severe heat and wind, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Last year was a historic year for climate disasters. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, we experienced 27 separate wind and water events across the country that cost 1 billion dollars or more. Natural disasters like these may result in irreversible damage not only to communities but also to conservation lands, the built environment and land trust operations. Disaster proofing your office, operations and the built environment can help you keep your focus on doing great conservation work when disaster strikes.

Join Anne Cope, PhD, chief engineer with Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, Dr. Marilyn Black, vice president and senior technical advisor for UL Research Institutes, Ben Waterman, facilities director at the Vermont Land Trust and Kelly Watkinson, land and climate program director for the Land Trust Alliance, as we examine actions land trust executive directors, office administrators and other staff can take to prepare for and mitigate wind and water related risk for their organizations, and other stakeholders. Volunteers and board members may also be interested in applying knowledge from this session to their own homes or workplaces.

Here’s a look at what we will cover:

  • How climate change is increasing risks for land trusts’ operations.

  • How to mitigate risks to your land trust’s offices, buildings, and structures, and the health and safety of staff.

  • Best practices and lessons learned, while preparing for and recovering from floods and storms.

Wind and Water is part two of Preparing for Natural Disasters, a webinar series put on in partnership with Chemical Insights Research Institute of UL Research Institutes and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety about the adverse impacts natural disasters can have on conservation lands, land trust operations and the permanence of conservation. Throughout the series, participants will learn about mitigating risks for different natural disasters and be connected to resources to help assess and address risks associated with these changing conditions.
