About This Webinar

Conservation easements with their restrictions and land trust oversight aren’t for everyone. So, what do you do when your favorite conservation tool won’t work for the landowner? Join long-time acquisition specialists Steve Swartz, the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust (retired) and Rex Linville, Land Trust Alliance, as they explore the benefits and drawbacks of the different conservation tools available to land trusts. Filled with stories and practical tips, this webinar is ideal for those new to acquisitions, wishing for a refresher on the different options available, or just interested in thinking more creatively.

Here’s a look at what we will cover:

  • The full range of options, from fee acquisition and conservation easements to largely symbolic or aspirational tools such as creating a registry program or honorary designations.

  • Alternative tools such as leases, covenants or deed restrictions, options or rights of first refusal, bequests or reserved life estates and remainders.

  • Evaluation of the risks vs returns for these various tools as well as the pros and cons of the various options.

  •  Tips for choosing the right tool, including deciding when it is right to simply walk away and live to conserve another day.
