Savvy land trusts can take advantage of a lesser-known grant program that awards up to $1 million for coastal wetland acquisition and restoration, including reimbursement of bridge loans. In 2023, the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program awarded nearly $20 million to fund 22 projects in eight states, protecting and restoring almost 14,000 acres of coastal wetland ecosystems. Over the past 30 years, the program has provided states with hundreds of millions of dollars to conserve coastal habitat. In general, eligible applicants include coastal and Great Lakes states and U.S. commonwealths and territories; however, tribes, local governments, conservation organizations and private landowners frequently work with state agencies to submit applications.

Applications for the 2023 grants are due June 30.
