Tips for getting started with your application

Current fiscal year timing

The federal fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30. Each year the Natural Resources Conservation Service releases guidance on program requirements.

While these are NRCS responsibilities, the guidance can provide you a fuller picture of what program-related activities state offices are undertaking throughout the federal fiscal year.

Why it’s best to apply as soon as you are ready regardless of available funds:

• NRCS accepts application on a rolling basis.

• States generally receive their initial allocation of funding early in the year (note: federal budget delays such as continuing resolutions often delay allocation to the state).

• After the initial allocation, there are typically a few rounds of reallocation of funding (approximately February–July).

• Funds are reallocated from states who did not use all of their funding to states who need additional funding to cover projects that are in the enrollment process.

• Getting landowner eligibility confirmed and applications in the door early is encouraged to ensure your project is considered during initial funding allocation period.

• If your project does not get funded initially due to lack of funds available in your state, keeping in communication with NRCS state staff about possible funding availability through upcoming rounds of reallocation between states.

How to work with NRCS

Relationships are key when it comes to moving a proposed Agriculture Land Easement project through application and enrollment. We suggest you:

• Get to know your state office staff.

• Determine ways of communicating that work best for both parties.

• When you are ready to submit an application package, be sure it is as complete as possible to help mitigate delays in processing.

• Be aware that NRCS staffing is limited, so don’t be shy about follow-up on project status.
