The future of land conservation is dependent upon how well land trusts can communicate messages that increase public awareness about the importance and relevance of land conservation to their lives and communities. In response to requests for communications support from members, the Land Trust Alliance launched the California Communicators Network to strengthen land trust communications capacity across California. This peer network offers free, flexible access to trainings and learning opportunities on strategic communications, social media marketing, volunteer engagement, fundraising communications and more to Alliance members and affiliate organizations.

About the network

The Alliance convenes the California Communicators Network to provide skills-based trainings, peer resource sharing, and leadership opportunities for emerging and experienced communications and marketing professionals in California.

To better respond to the needs of the land trust community in the state, the Alliance distributed a statewide survey on communications capacity to California members in January 2025. The survey demonstrated three key findings:

  • Communications teams are stretched thin, and expectations for impact are high.

  • There is a need for skill-based training.

  • There are abundant opportunities for collaborative communications.

The Alliance hosted a listening session in March 2025 to develop a stronger understanding of immediate capacity needs and topic areas where training and resources could be most impactful. Strong interest in the Alliance convening a space for peer learning was shared within the survey and the listening session. The network was launched in June 2025.

Today, the California Communicators Network meets on a bi-monthly basis and is comprised of land trust communications and marketing staff. The network is coordinated by Alliance staff alongside a volunteer planning team of network members that represents the varied geographies, experiences, staff sizes, and resources of land trusts in California.
