James City County Community Development

James City County Community Development Department oversees the open space preservation, planning, zoning, building safety and permits, and neighborhood development activities for James City County. It recommends sound land use strategies and coordinates and manages growth and related development activities in a balanced manner that implements the adopted Comprehensive Plan and the County’s Strategic Plan. The department also collaborates with the Virginia Department of Transportation to pursue funding to implement transportation projects identified in the Comprehensive Plan. In addition, the department educates citizens through civic group presentations, public input forums, and community outreach events. The Assistant Director manages the County's open space preservation programs with support of several other staff throughout the organization.
