The Land Trust Alliance and the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network launched the Chesapeake Bay Land and Water Initiative in 2016 to deploy an integrated and innovative approach to permanent land protection, stewardship, community engagement, partnerships and public policy that will preserve and enhance water quality across the 64,000-square-mile Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

A key component of the LWI is a small grants program that has awarded $813,815 through 39 grants since 2017. Awards of between $2,500 and $ 30,000 have funded projects, built capacity and expanded participation by land trusts in water quality efforts throughout the watershed. Consistent with guidance provided by the 2019 Intermediate Evaluation, the Alliance has recently focused LWI grants on supporting collaborative conservation partnerships that pursue water quality improvement through land protection.

More recent Alliance program assessments and evaluations re-emphasized the importance of collaborative partnerships. They also identify additional opportunities to catalyze water-focused land conservation. The 2022 Chesapeake Land and Water Initiative Program Summary and Assessment outlines a series of directives for future work that include 1) addressing climate change, 2) advancing community-centered conservation, 3) enabling collaborative leadership and 4) conveying financial capacity to do this work. Participants in the Alliance’s 2022 Water and Climate Short Course surfaced four primary needs that conservation organizations must meet to address water quality: 1) better partnerships with water-focused entities, 2) more accessible data and other decision-making tools, 3) sufficiently flexible financial resources to pursue water-related work and 4) advocacy and communications capacities.

2023 Grant Program

In recognition of these wide-ranging needs, the Alliance is inviting proposals between $5,000 and $15,000 to conduct work that addresses water quality. Support from members of the Chesapeake Bay Funders’ Network enables us to offer $60,000 in 2023.

Priority will be given to proposals that exemplify one or more of the following focus areas:

  • Strategic planning, resource development (such as a data or other decision-making tool), program deployment or project management that addresses flooding, aquatic habitat degradation or other climate impacts on water quality.

  • Conducting community-focused planning, resource development (such as communications materials), program deployment or project management that addresses inequitable access to clean water among Black, Indigenous and People of Color, individuals with disabilities and low-income communities.

  • Supporting, organizing or otherwise leading collaborative partnerships that advance outcomes of the Chesapeake Bay Agreement via land protection and engagement of water-focused agencies, firms or organizations.

  • Building capacity to secure financial resources that will be used to improve water quality, preferably through one or more of the focus areas above.

Grant requirements

  • Grantee must submit a complete application and financial information through the Alliance’s grant portal.

  • The project may only support work within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

  • Political advocacy may not be included as part of the proposed project scope.

  • Preference will be shown to accredited members of the Land Trust Alliance.

  • There is no match requirement, although a detailed budget that identifies other costs and sources of support for the project is a required element of the application.

  • Eligible expenses include staff time, travel and other costs that enable completion of proposed projects.
