Mission and vision

We save the places people need and love by strengthening land conservation across America. We envision a future where all Americans are inspired and empowered to conserve our lands and waters, fostering healthy, vibrant communities now and for future generations.

Milestones

Advocating for conservation

  • The Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act passed and halts tax abuse of conservation easement transactions after nearly a decade-long fight.

  • The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act provides nearly $370 billion to battle climate change, including significant funding increases for voluntary private land conservation and natural climate solutions.

Ensuring excellence and permanance

  • 10,274,441 acres of land insured by Terrafirma with 554 land trust members in 48 states, ensuring these lands are more resilient to potential legal challenges.

  • 465 land trusts are now accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission that protect 81% of all land and easements held by land trusts, totaling 23,240,764 acres of land.

Saving land together

  • 1,500+ conservationists gathered in person for the first time in three years in New Orleans for Rally: The National Land Conservation Conference.

  • 165 advocates from 31 states participated in over 110 in person congressional meetings at the 2022 Advocacy Days.

A message from the president and board chair

It was a landmark year for land conservation, land trusts and the Land Trust Alliance in 2022.

Congress approved billions of dollars in additional climate and conservation funding, for which we organized key support. And after a decade of hard work and persistence by the Alliance, our land trust members and our allies on Capitol Hill — and in the face of well-resourced opposition — Congress passed the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act, safeguarding a critical tax incentive for conservation easement donations. This victory was a long time coming, yet was in no way guaranteed, especially as promoters of abusive syndicated conservation easement transactions outspent the Alliance 10 to 1 on Capitol Hill. Thankfully, our community of land trusts, working with a group of congressional champions, held steadfast in their commitment to stopping the abuse.

In 2022, the Alliance had many other things to celebrate, including our 40th anniversary and a record-breaking $7.5 million in grants we awarded to land trusts to implement best practices, acquire land, address climate change, advance community-centered conservation and more.

It was a year that reminded us that saving land and supporting local communities isn’t about the quick fix or settling for stopgaps: For land conservation to stand the test of time, we must remain diligent and never lose sight of the importance of the work we do together.

We also made progress in 2022 toward a more compassionate and inclusive approach to conservation. A decade ago, the Alliance began its work to connect more people to the land and ensure that conservation is relevant to and benefitting millions of people who live in the United States. In 2022, we hired our first Director of Community-centered Conservation to help us ensure that land conservation provides equitable benefits to all people.

We firmly believe there is no limit to what the land conservation community can accomplish when we work together, embrace a people-centered approach and strive to permanently conserve another 60 million acres by the end of the decade.

If there is one thing our community has shown again and again, it is that the work of land trusts has never been more essential to the future of our nation. And in partnership with the Alliance, they have never been more ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.

Thank you for making all this good work possible.

Impact stories

“Rally was fantastic from start to finish — efficient, professional, incredibly enriching and loads of fun. I often say to people from outside of the land conservation world that this is the best professional meeting I ever go to, by a considerable margin, and this year maintained that high standard. I feel so fortunate to be able to attend, and so grateful to you for making it all happen.”
Henry Tepper, strategic conservation advisor, Fundación Tierra Austral in Chile
