Unscrupulous taxpayers have been creating so-called syndicated easements that vastly inflate tax deductions. In 2016, the Internal Revenue Service identified syndicated easements as so-called listed transactions, which means it recognizes them as abusive tax shelters and requires any involvement to be disclosed by taxpayers.
