Midewin is the largest natural area in the Chicago region, encompassing 20,000 acres that provide needed habitat to numerous species amid surrounding urban and agricultural sprawl. Last week, operators prepared the land for the future planting of native prairie and wetland species. Then it all abruptly came to a halt.
