Texas prairie near Houston gains new protection as development grows

A stretch of open prairie west of Houston rolls out in muted greens and golds, where tall grasses bend in the wind and shallow wetlands hold onto the last of a recent rain. In the distance, birds lift off in clusters, moving across a landscape that, despite being surrounded by one of the nation's fastest-growing metro areas, still functions much as it has for generations. That landscape just got bigger.
